We have successfully obtained planning permission for a 500kW straw/woodchip fuelled biomass boiler that will provide hot water and heat for a large country house hotel in Hertfordshire.
This development which is located in Green Belt includes the construction of a sizeable new building to house the boiler and its feedstock.
An integrated approach was taken to this application as the applicants not only own the country house hotel but also a large arable farming business which surrounds it. The installation of the boiler will allow the hotel to become self-sufficient in hot water and heating.
There were some considerable challenges associated with obtaining planning permission, the development is located immediately adjacent to a SSSI and a sensitive area of landscape.
Our approach was to instigate early pre-application discussions with the Local Planning Authority in order to identify their concerns and the matters that would have to be addressed in some detail in the planning application.
The key issue was to demonstrate the very special circumstances that would allow this inappropriate development in the Green Belt. Our specialist knowledge of farm diversification & renewable energy development planning were combined to produce a very robust planning application which received Officer’s delegated approval.
We have now secured planning permissions for wind turbines, solar parks and biomass energy developments in the Green Belt.
